The National Museum in Szczecin invites its visitors to see the exhibition of art at the court of Pomeranian dukes in its heyday in the 16th and early 17th centuries.
Although after the dynasty had perished in 1637, the Pomeranian dukes’ legacy was divided amongtheir heirs and, in a great extent, dispersed, the artworks that have survived to the present and are presented in the exhibition are a testimony to crucial meaning of Pomeranian court as a cultural and artistic center of late Renaissance.
The collection of the Szczecin Museum is the largest one related to the dukes of the House of Griffins' patronage. The exhibition consists of paintings, sculptures and applied arts. One of the most precious objects on display is The Portrait of Duke Philip I by Lucas Cranach the Younger of 1541. Another unique relic of the court culture is The Family Tree of Pomeranian Dukes, 7-meter-long painting by Cornelius Crommeny of 1598, showing images of as many, as 155 persons from the House of Griffins. A vital part of the exhibition are jewels and robes brought out of Szczecin castle crypt after World War II. They include a famous aigrette (decoration of a calpack) with diamonds of duke Francis I. Among the exhibits there is also, borrowed from the Merseburg Cathedral, The Portrait of Duke Francis I on a Bier, presenting the duke wearing the same costume and jewels that may be seen in the exhibition.
During the preparations for the exhibition, numerous relics underwent thorough restoration and regained their primal appearance and glamour. To emphasize the beauty of Renaissance objects, care was taken also of modern exhibition infrastructure, professional display cases and lighting. The issues related to the culture and art of Pomerania are illustrated with multimedia presentations. The visitors have the possibility to use free audioguides available in the ticket office. The Museum has also arranged an interesting education offer for children and youth, including exercise books for young visitors.
