The name of the reserve, Genius Loci (Latin "Protective Spirit"), refers to the tradition of lucky, chosen places that possess their protective spirit. We believe that this Latin term suits best the unique nature of Ostrów Tumski, which for over 1,000 years has been inextricably linked with the history of our country and our city. Excavations carried out here since 2008 have uncovered well-preserved, impressively constructed medieval ramparts surrounding the stronghold located on the island. Thanks to the research we know that in the 10th century this place was bustling with political, economic and religious life. It was here that the most important decisions concerning the shape of the emerging state were made. The stronghold was incredibly modern for its time. The genius of the place brought together industrious and innovative people, who were able to put great ideas into practice, organise others around noble causes and inspire them with good ideas.

The Archaeological Reserve Genius Loci is a place which combines tradition with modern technology. A fully interactive exhibition, equipped with multimedia kiosks and holographic projectors, takes visitors on a tour around the 10th-century architecture of Ostrów Tumski. The exhibition begins in the cinema room, where a 3D film about the origins of Poznan and archaeological research carried out in the area is screened. Then one moves on to the rooms with glass floors, under which the ramparts of the Poznań stronghold from the 10th century and the foundations of the wall of Bishop Jan Lubrański are exposed.

The aim of the Archaeological Reserve "Genius Loci" is to provide visitors with direct contact with the historical relics of the beginnings of the Polish state and the oldest fortification structures. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the building has designated space for temporary exhibitions.

The Reserve invites the representatives of various branches of science who would like to share the ideas and show interesting solutions in technology, engineering as well as culture and art. We want this innovative centre for historical education to become a place where the past attracts open-minded and creative people and become an inspiration for the future.
