This is the oldest museum in Warmia and Mazury and one of the most interesting cultural institutions in the region of northern Poland, which has approx. 115,000 items in its collection. museum exhibits. The museum is located in the center of the downtown buildings of the Old Town. Its headquarters are: the eastern building of Podzamcze and the western building - the Junior High School. Historic buildings are located around the courtyard of the so-called the northern outer ward, a spatial and construction relic of the former complex of the Teutonic castle. In both buildings, you can admire the exhibits collected for over 150 years, from the surrounding archaeological sites, including medieval old town assumptions, the former Viking trading post Truso and the Gothic necropolis in Weklice. Excavations, carried out on an unprecedented scale in Europe, make that every year the museum collections grow by thousands of items made of ceramics, metal, wood, leather, glass or amber. Some of these objects are unique on a European scale, such as a collection of medieval musical instruments and pilgrim signs, Viking amulets and a sun compass, or richly decorated everyday objects of Roman provenance. The found artifacts testify to the extraordinary history and extensive trade contacts of the inhabitants of the Elbląg region with many regions of former Europe. or richly decorated everyday objects of Roman provenance. The museum in Elbląg successfully disseminates knowledge about the prehistory of Polish lands, the history of the Żuławy region, the Vistula Lagoon and Elbląg itself, which is reflected in the presented exhibitions. The institution's offer is addressed to a wide range of recipients: residents of Elbląg and the surrounding communes and districts, tourists visiting the city, children, pupils, students, reconstruction groups, scientists and researchers.
