The Historical Museum in Ełk was established by the resolution of the City Council dated 28th August 2012.
Since 2018, the seat of the Museum has been located in the former railway station building in the revitalised area of the Ełk Narrow Gauge Railway (in the register of objects of cultural heritage since 1991), built between 1912 and 1918, presently a part of the Museum.
Apart from the history of the city itself, there is also the region of Masuria which we treat as a kind of historical and cultural phenomenon and which lies within the scope of interest of the Historical Museum in Ełk. The history of the city and its inhabitants cannot be analysed in isolation from the history of the region. In the preserved urban space of Ełk, on a micro scale, one can see traces of processes that for centuries have been shaping the life of the whole Masuria. Factors such as nature, borderland (of nations, states, and cultures), influence of modernisation with its benefits (railway) and negative aspects (modern nationalisms) have left their mark on the city and entire Masuria. Through our activities we want to create space for dialogue with history – space that is open to the multithreaded and multicultural heritage of Ełk and Masuria.
The Historical Museum in Ełk accomplishes its mission by assembling collections, organising exhibitions and cultural events, as well as through educational, knowledge – disseminating and publishing activities.
