In Sudol near Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski there is an unusual place – the Archaeological Museum and Krzemionki Reserve. Striped flint mines operated here during the Neolithic and Early Bronze Age.
The architecture of the prehistoric excavations and the landscape on the surface are an invaluable testimony to the knowledge and technical capabilities of the people of the Stone Age. This unique relic of the past was declared a Monument of History in 1994. Krzemionki, along with the Borownia and Korycizna mining fields and the prehistoric mining settlement on the Gawroniec hill in Ćmielów, which together form the Krzemionki Prehistoric Striped Flint Mining Region, were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019.
The tourist route in Krzemionki is approx. 1.5 km long and presents a unique post-mining landscape from over 5,000 years ago. The most interesting part of the route is its several-hundred-metre long underground section. It allows you to see well-preserved prehistoric mining excavations. When visiting the mines in Krzemionki, you have a unique opportunity to see places that have not changed much since the time when flint concretions were extracted from them several thousand years ago. The underground tourist route in Krzemionki is the only such facility in the world open to the general public!
In Krzemionki, you can also visit museum exhibitions and a reconstruction of a prehistoric village. The multimedia exhibition „Lords of Flint” presents the functioning of Neolithic mines and the times in which their creators lived and worked.
There is also the nature reserve „Krzemionki Opatowskie”. There are 39 species of rare and protected plants here. This area is also a refuge for many species of animals.
