The museum is located on the site of the former Rakowice-Czyżyny airport, created before World War I by the Austrians and closed in 1963 due to the expansion of Nowa Huta. Thanks to the existence of the Museum, this area still has an aviation function.
The museum collects, restores and makes available monuments of aviation technology, ensures the preservation of the aviation character of the place and conducts educational and scientific activities. Initially, it had a small piece of land from a closed airport, one hangar, an administration building and a former parachute station building. In the following years, the area occupied by the Museum expanded and new facilities were added - former garages of the 2nd Aviation Regiment, donated by the army in the early 1990s.
Currently, the Polish Aviation Museum covers 25.7 hectares of land. This area is entered into the register of monuments. The museum has over 250 airplanes, gliders and helicopters and over 140 aircraft engines, as well as many smaller exhibits such as aircraft weapons, flight instruments, uniforms and decorations. The exhibitions are located both in historic, pre-war airport buildings that have been renovated, as well as in buildings built in the post-war period, during the Museum's operation, as well as in the open area.
