The oldest documented roots of the history of the castle hill date back to the 11th century. At that time, there was an agricultural settlement consisting of several cottages. At the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries, a large part of it was burnt down. After the fire, a borough was located on the hill. The first source notes thereon date back to 1179, when the Oświęcim castellan was excluded from Krakow jurisdiction and handed over to the princes of Opole-Racibórz. It is known that at that time there was already a wooden castle on the hill – the seat of the castellan. In 1241, the borough of Oświęcim was destroyed by the Tatars. In the following years it was rebuilt and a brick defensive tower was constructed on the castle hill.
On 1 January 2010, the Oświęcim Castle became the seat of the Castle Museum in Oświęcim.
