The Wieliczka Salt Mine is one of the oldest enterprises in Europe. It was a production plant already in the 13th century, and over the following centuries it contributed to the power of the Polish economy. It supplied salt to the tables of almost all of Europe.

Nowadays, it is one of the most frequently visited places in Poland and a still active mining plant, where intensive security works are carried out to protect historic places. With its enormous heritage of material culture and richness of inanimate nature, underground Wieliczka is a unique monument on a global scale.

The Wieliczka mine has as many as 2,391 chambers and over 245 kilometers of galleries. So many excavations were created near Wieliczka during over 700 years of salt deposit exploitation.

Tourists visit a small area of the entire mine: approximately 2% of the underground workings. Apart from the sightseeing trails, as well as in some chambers and sidewalks of the routes, renovation works are being carried out. They include, among others: on securing workings by anchoring or wooden casings. Reconstructions of sidewalks and modernization of mining shafts are also being carried out.
