There are two tunnels under the castle hill in Oświęcim, located between Zamkowa and Bulwary Streets. The first one, which is older, runs in an east-west direction and connects the opposite slopes of the hill. It’s the so called “long” or “Austrian” tunnel. It was built during the Austrian partition, probably at the end of the 18th century. It has a pear-shaped cross-section and was built of brick. It contains a well, which was originally accessible from the castle courtyard.
In the period of 1940-1944, Germans extended the existing Austrian tunnel under the castle hill. They also dug a second tunnel in a north-south direction, crossing it perpendicularly with the previous one. It is called a “transverse tunnel” and is constructed from reinforced concrete cradles, with the cross-section of an incomplete ellipsis.
During the German occupation, they served as anti-aircraft shelters, and the entrance to them led from the castle courtyard. The descent down the clamps in the vertical ventilation shaft was from the side of today’s Zamkowa Street. In the 1980s, works were carried out to protect the tunnel structures, and some damaged fragments were rebuilt. The entire tunnel is an underground structure with an area of approx. 300 m². The object is entered into the register of historic buildings and is subject to conservation protection.
