Ogrodzieniec Castle, built during the times of King Casimir the Great on the highest hill of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, is the largest and most famous castle in Silesia, as well as the most popular of all the castles on the Trail of the Eagles' Nests.
It was situated on the highest Jurassic hill, Góra Janowskiego - 515 m above sea level, from where it was and is still clearly visible throughout the area. The majestic ruins of the castle stir the imagination of the former splendor of the fortress and the turbulent history that is reflected in the background of the history of Poland.
The entire facility consists of two parts, namely the outer ward, where there were once stables, coach houses, a forge, a brewery and a distillery, and currently, in the corner on the south side, there is a torture chamber. Next, there is the upper castle, which housed a kitchen, a well, bedrooms and residential and representative chambers.
The entire complex covers an area of approximately 3.5 ha, and the length of the defensive wall is approximately 400 meters. The oldest part of the castle is located on the northern side on a rock, and it is the so-called High Castle. There used to be cloisters around the lord's courtyard, connecting different parts of the castle on individual floors. In the same courtyard, there are rebuilt rooms on the sides that were once Hajduck shops. In the center, there is a reconstructed rainwater cistern. On this level there was also the castle kitchen, next to which there was a well and living quarters for the cooks. Under the kitchen there were shooting cellars, which served as pantries. Currently, there is a knight's inn there.
The upper floors of the castle housed bedrooms, a dining room, living quarters, a treasury, an armory, a powder magazine and a storage room. There are also towers located on the rocks that served as observation and defense functions, and the southern tower was also a prison. From the south there is also the so-called "crow's foot", i.e. an added branch, which enlarged the living quarters and increased the defensive value.
There are two courtyards on either side of the crow's foot. The smaller "birdhouse" courtyard, which is closed by a curtain wall with reconstructed wooden porches, served as an economic place, where domestic birds were probably kept. The second "tournament" courtyard could probably also have served as a castle garden, although it also had defensive values.
From the higher points of the castle, in good weather conditions, there is an impressive view of the Jura, as well as Czubatka, the highest peak of the highland that crowns the castle hill.
