The castle in Birów shows us what a defensive settlement might have looked like from the times when Poland was ruled by the first Piast dynasty.

The main building material was wood, but our ancestors also used earth and stones. Ramparts and a palisade protected against enemies. When building them, the natural defensive qualities of the mountain were made great use of - steep rocks and precipitous slopes.

The last fortified stronghold was built in Birów probably in the 13th century. Poland was then divided into districts. At the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, the arduous process of consolidating the Polish state began. The Piast prince Władysław the Elbow-high fought for the throne in Kraków with the Czech king Wenceslaus. We can probably blame the latter for the burning of Birow. Archaeologists found a coin with his image here. Had some Czech warrior brought it with him?

The square within the wooden fortifications of the stronghold is called the majdan. The everyday life of the town's inhabitants took place here. The approximate location of the maidan can be seen on the plan of the town.

During the heyday of this wooden stronghold, the square inside the stockade was teeming with life. At the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, the crew was not very large: a dozen, maybe several dozen warriors. This number included servants, traders, etc. On the Maidan you could certainly hear the loud neighing of horses and the squealing of pigs; the cows demanded to be milked; the poultry fled from under my feet in fear. Only a few soldiers looked out for danger. The rest repaired their weapons, chased the blacksmith in the primitive forge, and chased wenches.

The reconstructed Royal Castle on Birów Mountain is a real treat for history lovers and seekers of traces of the past. In the inselberg massif, where the wooden stronghold was located, there are numerous caves, formerly inhabited by our ancestors. They were created by the patient erosion of soft limestone to become a home or escape for many animals and people. Archaeological research has confirmed the presence of people in this place for 30,000 years. years ago. Found here, among others: fragments of reindeer antlers, cave bear bones, flint tools and a broken end of a polished bone blade (dating to the end of the Paleolithic period). Found artifacts from various eras: horn and flint tools, weaving spindle whorls, arrowheads, horseshoes, whether clay vessels made it possible to learn about the history of the place and the way of life of its former inhabitants. The last period of settlement in the area of Birów dates back to the early Middle Ages and the Middle Ages. A Slavic settlement was then established here.

At the foot of Góra Birów there is a barrow cemetery. During archaeological works in 1992. this place was examined and it was found that there were three burial mounds here. An interesting fact is that no human remains were found in any of them. There are similar cases known in archeology which indicate a barrow burial (used around the 7th-8th centuries).

Currently, in the reconstructed medieval settlement-style Grod, tourists can see thematic exhibitions gathered in the settlement owner's cottage and the warriors' tower, which also houses artifacts found during research.

Schools and organized groups have the opportunity to take part in profiled trips, live history lessons, or a Walk Through the Epochs - a guided journey from the earliest times to the present day.
