The construction of the castle in Gniew began in 1283. The supervision of the entire work was entrusted to Dietrich von Spira, the first commander of Gniew. The works lasted about 40 years. The Hammer Forge is an authentic specimen of early technology, the only surviving site of the type. It is the largest and longest operated power hammer forge of Oliwa. The facility remained in operation for about 350 years utilising the power of the dammed water of the Oliwa Brook.

The Witches’ Tower was built from 1411 to 1415. In the 17 th  century the defense tower was converted into a prison for women suspected of sorcery. The photographs at the Gdańsk Photography Gallery are of local, regional and historic nature. The bulk of the collection is Gdańsk photography and photographs from Poland’s former Eastern Borderlands. Recently, thanks to artists’ donations, we have considerably enlarged our collection of contemporary art photography from Poland and abroad.
